ZooBank: the world register of animal names (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
This is the ZooBank prototype, providing access to 1.5 million scientific names of animals. This prototype is based on Thomson Zoological's "Index of Organism Names", which is the electronic archive of Zoological Record, going back to 1978 (vol. 115). A project to digitise the remaining volumes of Zoological Record back to 1864 (vol. 1), is nearing completion. These names will therefore soon also be available through ZooBank. The next version of ZooBank, coming later in 2006, will provide an interface for the voluntary submission of animal names. If a mandatory registration system is eventually adopted by the zoological community, we anticipate that in the very near future ZooBank will become a complete, authoritative, record of all scientific names of animals.

International Working Group on Taxonomic Databases (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
The International Working Group on Taxonomic Databases is a not for profit scientific and educational association, affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences, formed to establish international collaboration among biological database projects so as to promote the wider and more effective dissemination of information about the World's heritage of biological organisms for the benefit of the world at large.

All Species Foundation (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
The ALL Species Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the complete inventory of all species of life on Earth within the next 25 years - a human generation.

ETI Bioinformatics (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
ETI BioInformatics develops and produces scientific and educational computer-aided information systems.

Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
Welcome to ITIS, the Integrated Taxonomic Information System! Here you will find authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world

The Tree of Life Web project (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists from around the world. On more than 4000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their evolutionary history (phylogeny), and characteristics.

The Prometheus Taxonomic Database (Taxonomic Databases)
Link
The aim of the project is to construct a database system that will meet the requirements of current taxonomy practices. In particular, it will allow taxonomists to view and explore alternative classifications. The system will support provision of single authoritative classifications for use by non-taxonomists such as legislators. As a test application, taxonomists at RBGE will produce a revision of a plant group using the Prometheus system.

MySQL (General Database Software)
Link
The software available in MySQL Network and the MySQL Community Edition is available under the "dual licensing" model. Under this model, users may choose to use MySQL products under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (commonly known as the "GPL") or under a commercial license.

IBM DB2 Universal Database (General Database Software)
Link
The evaluation period for this trial is 90 days

Oracle Database (General Database Software)
Link
All software downloads are free, and each comes with a development license that allows you to use full versions of the products only while developing and prototyping your applications. You can buy Oracle products with full-use licenses at any time from the online Oracle Store or from your Oracle sales representative.

Hibernate (Object Oriented Database Software)
Link
Hibernate is a powerful, ultra-high performance object/relational persistence and query service for Java. Hibernate lets you develop persistent classes following common Java idiom - including association, inheritance, polymorphism, composition, and the Java collections framework. Hibernate allows you to express queries in its own portable SQL extension (HQL), as well as in native SQL, or with Java-based Criteria and Example objects. Unlike many other persistence solutions, Hibernate does not hide the power of SQL or JDBC from you and guarantees that your investment in relational technology and knowledge is as valid as always. Hibernate is downloaded more than 3000 times every day.

Ozone (Object Oriented Database Software)
Link
The Ozone Database Project is a open initiative for the creation of an open source, Java based, object-oriented database management system.

HSQLDB (Object Oriented Database Software)
Link
HSQLDB 1.8.0 final is out. A year of solid development since 1.7.2 brings a more powerful engine that supports data up to 8GB, has better SQL capabilities and runs with greater resilience. HSQLDB 1.8.0 is also the database engine in OpenOffice.org 2.0, soon to appear on millions of desktops around the world.

Db4o (Object Oriented Database Software)
Link
db4o is the open source object database that enables Java and .NET developers to slash development time and costs and achieve unprecedented levels of performance. The unique design of db4o's native object database engine makes it the ideal choice to be embedded in mobile devices, in packaged software or in real-time control systems.

Versant (Object Oriented Database Software)
Link
Using object databases for data storage brings powerful advantages to applications that use complex C++ and Java object models, have high concurrency requirements, and large data sets. It is difficult, time consuming, expensive in development, and expensive at run time, to map the objects into a relational database and performance can suffer. Versant Object Database 7.0 is designed to handle the navigational access, seamless data distribution, and enterprise scale often required by these applications.

Systematic Biology
Link
Systematic Biology (SB) is the journal of the Society of Systematic Biologists. SB is published six times per year: February, April, June, August, October, and December. As stated in our constitution, the objective of this society is the advancement of the science of systematic biology in all its aspects of theory, principles, methodology, and practice, for both living and fossil organisms, with emphasis on areas of common interest to all systematic biologists regardless of individual specialization.

Evolution
Link
The journal Evolution publishes articles in all areas of evolutionary biology.

Ecology
Link
Established in 1920, Ecology publishes research and synthesis papers on all aspects of ecology, with particular emphasis on papers that develop new concepts in ecology, that test ecological theory, or that lead to an increased appreciation for the diversity of ecological phenomena. Theoretical, analytical, experimental, empirical, historical, and descriptive approaches are all appropriate, though preference is given to research and synthesis that leads to generalizations potentially applicable to other species, populations, communities, or ecosystems.

The American Naturalist
Link
Since its inception in 1867, The American Naturalist has maintained its position as one of the world's most renowned, peer-reviewed publications in ecology, evolution, and population and integrative biology research. While addressing topics in community and ecosystem dynamics, evolution of sex and mating systems, organismal adaptation, and genetic aspects of evolution, AN emphasizes sophisticated methodologies and innovative theoretical syntheses--all in an effort to advance the knowledge of organic evolution and other broad biological principles.
